The way we see it, popups are a marketer’s best friend. 

Nope, we’re not talking about those old-school pop-ups that are annoying, irrelevant, and cause your visitors to churn more quickly…

Instead, we’re referring to modern pop-ups that you can customize and use to target specific customer segments.

Here’s an example: the primary goal of your website is probably to generate leads for your company (no duh).

But you might be gunning for a secondary goal as well, which is to increase your social media followers. Now, how do you optimize your site for both goals, but not have the second goal “cannibalize” the first?

Well, you can use a strategically placed pop-up to do just that. If you create a pop-up that only shows up on your Thank You page, then you can get customers who have already converted as leads to follow you on your social media channels, giving you a win-win.

If you’re still using standard-issue, generic pop-ups on your site, it’s time to change that once and for all. In this blog post, we’ll walk you through how to use Poptin to create smart pop-ups for your website, and share how you can connect Poptin to your Sendlane account.

What is Poptin?

Simply put, Poptin is a tool that helps marketers create engaging web and mobile popups to improve their conversion rates.

You can use Poptin to meet different business objectives, including:

  • Getting more leads and sales
  • Reduce shopping cart abandonment
  • Increasing overall engagement

With Poptin, you also get to choose from a huge variety of pop-up formats…

These include:

  • Lightbox
  • Top and bottom bars
  • Mobile pop-ups
  • Full screen pop-ups
  • Side pop-ups at six possible locations
  • Countdown pop-ups
  • Social widgets

Poptin also lets you choose when you want to show your pop-up. You can have your pop-up appear after your visitor scrolls down, after several seconds, after several clicks, after a link click, or after your visitor displays exit intent.

Using Poptin to Generate More Leads

To get started with Poptin, sign up for a free Poptin account, then fill out your basic information.

From here, you’ll be prompted to create your first Popup or Embedded Form:


From here you'll need to select the Goal of your new Popup or Form:

  • Get More Leads
  • Increase Sales
  • Announcements
  • Grow Email List

Preview and select the template you want to begin with from a variety of options!


Next, go ahead and tweak your pop-up using Poptin’s editor.

The General Settings tab on the left lets you change your pop-up size, background color, button color, etc, and you can click on the text directly to edit it.

Don’t forget to scroll down and expand the Advanced Settings tab. Here, you can change your pop-up’s entry effect, and determine whether it’s used as a content gate, whether it closes automatically, etc.

Once you’ve finished configuring your pop-up, make sure it looks good on both desktop and mobile, then click the Next button to set your Display Rules.

When choosing how you want to trigger your pop-up, keep in mind that you have to strike a balance between quantity and quality.

For example, if you decide that you want to display your pop-up when your visitor has visited 10 pages on your site, that will obviously bring you traffic that’s a lot more qualified and high-intent.

That said, doing this also limits the number of occasions in which your pop-up is shown, and the worry is that you’ll end up with so few leads generated, it’s not even worth your while.

Once you’re done, click on Publish, then copy and paste the code provided on your website.

Pro-tips to Help You Generate More Leads With Poptin

Now that you understand the basics of using Poptin, we’ll share some advanced tips that will help you supercharge the pop-ups you create.

1. Add a Countdown Timer to Your Popups

Countdown timers are great for creating urgency, and you can boost your conversion rates and generate more leads by adding these to your popups.

To do this, just choose the timer block from the Elements tab to add it to your Popup.

From here you can adjust your timer settings based on the offer you've created!

2. Customize your Display Frequency

By default, your popups will display once a day to all visitors.

To change this, navigate to the Display Rules section:

First, you can choose to restrict your pop-up such that it only displays for new visitors or returning visitors.

Now, say you’re an eCommerce store, and you want to offer a special 10% promo code for visitors who sign up for your mailing list.

Here, it makes sense to only display your pop-up to new visitors. This way, your customers won’t be able to abuse the system, and repeatedly sign up for your mailing list (using throwaway email accounts) just to get multiple promo codes.

On top of that, you can also choose whether you want to display your pop-up:

  • • Once a day
  • • Every visit
  • • Every session
  • • Once every few days
  • • Once every few visits, or
  • • All pages all the time

3. Use Poptin’s Autopilot Trigger

Not sure when’s the best time to show your pop-up? Poptin comes with a handy Autopilot Trigger feature, and this lets the tool run dozens of tests to learn the behavior of your website visitors, and choose the best pop-up trigger for you.

Note that Autopilot Trigger is recommended for websites with more than 10,000 visits per month. If you don’t have that much traffic yet, using manual triggers should suffice for now!
